Key Features

  • Anemone coronaria is best known as a cut flower. The blossoms have brightly-colored petals and dark centers. They bloom in early spring or late summer, depending on where you live and when the corms are planted.
  • Anemones are also called "windflowers" because the word "anemone" derives from the Greek term anemos, meaning "winds." Anemos is related to the mythological idea that each Greek god was associated with a cardinal direction, the winds that blew in from that direction, and specific seasons and weather events, too.
  • Spread by underground rhizomes, flowers spread easily and can be used in containers, as cut flowers, or as ground cover. Their low maintenance and resistance to deer make them an easy choice for landscapes.
  • Anemones are relatively easy to care for once they're established in the garden. They like regular water in well-drained soil and a balance of sun and shade.
  • Anemones like cooler daytime temperatures in the 60s. Some varieties planted in zones 7-9 are winter hardy. Plants in colder winter zones may make better annuals, with new flowers planted each spring.

Description

The fluffy flowers of Anemone coronaria offer some of the first rich colors in early spring. These crepe paper like flowers are wonderful in containers or as a little gift that will surely bring a smile. Also in spring, woodland species carpet shady to part sun areas with nickel to quarter sized flowers in shades of white, pink, purple blue and green. They are a favorite for weddings and last over 10 days after their blooms are cut and placed in a vase.
